Best Surfboards for Beginners 2023

Your first board (if you are really serious).

From my experience coaching lessons bringing people from timid all the way to building confidence and catching green waves all on their own. I will do my best to keep this quick and simple with my top 2 tips.

Tip 1: EVERYONE will say FOAMY! FOAMY! FOAMY! Do not get me wrong, I will always have a few in my quiver because they are so fun and never a bad option but they are not a necessity to start surfing. Let me tell you why. Surfing on your typical foamy is 75% different than a hard top. So if you are really committing too loving a sport I would say start on an epoxy (Hard) . They last forever, extremely durable, and you will progress further lengths. I wouldn’t want you to get a foamy to start then need another board a month later after you are ready to level up.

Tip 2: The size of your stick matters. Too long your board can be hard to carry, maneuver, and it can be discouraging. Too small not enough paddle power, smaller surface to learn on, and more difficult to find balance over all.

With these two tips what is left… the age old mid length. I am 5’1 so for my mid length I keep around a floaty 6’4-8’6. My suggestion AT LEAST 1 foot taller than yourself and you can play with how much more or less board you want with your surfing goals.

Without further a do I will list my favorite beginner boards that newbies in the water should consider. I will include my favorite epoxies to foam tops that will get you were you need to go. *disclaimer check out our water etiquette because regardless of your stick you can still hurt and seriously piss other people off.
